The ToolShed Solar Panels: A Green Powerhouse

The ToolShed's 100-kilowatt solar panel system is a shining example of how solar energy can be harnessed to power an entire building. This extensive system not only provides power for our Webstore, Warehouse, Retail Store, and Head Office departments, but it also charges our four electric forklifts, and fuels the new Electric Vehicle (EV) Carpark in front of the building. The switch to solar power was a pivotal moment in our sustainability journey.

From Steep Bills to Sustainable Savings

Before the installation of this impressive solar panel system, we were grappling with a monthly power bill that reached a staggering $3,500. The thought of the environmental footprint and thousands of dollars spent on power per month was daunting. This prompted the switch to solar and now with the panels in place, we generate enough energy to power the entire building and all its electronics, leaving us with surplus energy to feed back into the grid and benefit New Zealand as a whole.

Turning Sunshine into Savings

The installation of this system was not without its costs. We invested in 26 rows of 22 solar panels per row, totalling an impressive 572 solar panels on the roof. However, the initial financial outlay was quickly offset by the immense savings. In just three short years, the system paid for itself, and the ToolShed is now reaping the rewards of our forward-thinking investment.

A Greener Tomorrow: Expanding the Vision

One of the driving forces behind the ToolShed's decision to go solar was the desire to reduce our environmental footprint. With $3,500 worth of power consumption each month, we recognised the need to make a change. Our solar panel system not only dramatically reduces our carbon footprint but also positions us as a leader in green business practices. The ToolShed’s commitment to sustainability doesn't stop here. We have ambitious plans to power the new upcoming stores with solar panels. Moreover, we are exploring opportunities to retrofit our existing stores to be solar-powered as well.

 

The ToolShed's journey is an example of how a business can not only reduce operational costs but also make a significant contribution to the environment.
